Chip Griffin to talk about 'lively stones'
On Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at Boothbay Region Adult Ed, Chip Griffin, attorney, author and local historian, will be giving a talk about the Spiritual Reawakening Amidst Social Taboos in Boothbay, 1767-1778. Chip has authored and co-authored several local history books, and his talks are always information.
Boothbay’s leading minister and citizen, John Murray, led the greatest spiritual reawakening in Maine history but confronted many challenges in this eastern frontier area. Sometimes leading citizens and sometimes not, Boothbay’s settlers often violated the law. Punishment almost always required public confessions and apologies in Boothbay’s only church that doubled as government for Boothbay in 1766 and the early 1770s. These criminals and their crimes were carefully preserved in church session records by our colonial predecessors for us to enjoy and perhaps learn from today Learn the history of that change, enshrining in particular the role of human actors in the long historical drama, those "lively stones" who undergird this religious institution's long growth and development.
