St. Andrews Village invites nature lovers of all ages to the Inn on Friday, June 29 at 2 p.m. for “Owls of Maine,” a presentation by the Chewonki Foundation.

The program features live owls and introduces participants to the owls native to Maine and New England. Beginning with slides and sounds, attendees will learn the identifying characteristics and calls of each owl. Then, using talons, wings, and skulls, presenters will explore the adaptations of these silent nocturnal hunters. They will also speak about identification in the woods and what to do when a young owl in found.

The program will end with an intimate and detailed look at live owls, bringing these creatures of the night into the light! Seeing live owls offers the rare opportunity to observe these fascinating birds Chewonki currently cares for. Some include: great horned owls, barred owls, eastern screech owls, and a northern saw-whet owl. Three of these four species will be brought to the afternoon program. Each of these native birds is considered a non-releasable animal with various injuries to their wings, prohibiting their ability to survive in the wild.
