Celebrating 90 Years of Smiles, Strength, and Community at the Boothbay Region YMCA
If you visit the Boothbay Region YMCA during an Aqua Fitness Class, you’lllikely find Freda Burnham right where she likes to be: in the front row, smiling brightly and ready to get to work.
On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Freda celebrated her 90th birthday and joined a special group of YMCA members recognized through the Dorothy Abbott Senior Stars Award, which provides a complimentary membership to members in good standing upon turning 90.
A member of the Boothbay Region YMCA for more than 13 years, Freda began attending aqua fitness classes about 5 years ago. Since then, she has become a familiar and beloved face in the pool. While some classmates enjoy catching up and chatting between exercises, Freda takes her workout seriously. She’s focused, dedicated, and always sporting one of the biggest smiles in the class.
When asked about her favorite exercise, Freda doesn’t hesitate: “All of them! It helps me stay limber.”
Her least favorite? Squats. At her height in the pool, bending down means she’spractically underwater!
Freda’s milestone also celebrates the remarkable legacy of Dorothy Abbott, one of the founding members of the Boothbay Region YMCA. In the early 1950s, Dorothy helped lead the effort to establish a YMCA on the peninsula, despite initial doubts that the small community could support one. Her determination helped bring the Boothbay Region YMCA to life in 1955. The Senior Stars Award, established in 2007, honors Dorothy’s legacy of lifelong wellness, perseverance, and community connection.
Nearly 71 years after the Y’s founding, Freda is a wonderful reminder of why that vision mattered. The Y is more than a place to exercise. It’s a place to build friendships, stay active, and find joy in showing up for yourself and one another.
Happy 90th Birthday, Freda! Thank you for reminding us that staying young at heart is about moving, smiling, and never giving up your spot in the front row.
