On Wednesday, Oct. 14, at approximately 3:56 p.m., Sgt. Higgins was dispatched to assist with a medical call at 125 Atlantic Avenue on the marina. Upon arrival he observed a male individual with injuries being attended to by his fiancé on the deck of a sailing vessel.

Sgt. Higgins began life-saving efforts and was soon assisted by Marine Patrol Officer James Mayotte and the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.

An investigation has confirmed that the cause of death was a fall from height, and the victim, Luc Maheu, 34 years old of Richmond, California, died at the scene.

A brief post note to this case: some of you may have seen Luc’s vessel docked at a marina on the east side of the harbor. It is a beautiful twin masted schooner. Although Luc is from California, he and his fiancé came here to purchase the vessel and had been spending time aboard in Maine.

Luc’s untimely passing does not dim his bright light and the obvious passion he showed for his craft, a true sailor at heart, he and his fiancé fit right in here in this harbor with its rich shipping and sailing history.

A GoFundMe campaign page has been created to help support his family at https://bit.ly/3khyNqD
