Burnt Island message to the community
Dear Editor:
At Burnt Island, we are excited for the upcoming summer season. The Keepers organization has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure a successful season of visiting, learning, and community engagement.
We have been strengthening our partnership with the Maine Department of Marine Resources, scheduling visits for student groups and community organizations, and preparing for a busy public season. Balmy Days Cruises will once again provide regular transportation to the island four days a week for public visits. We are also thrilled that construction of a new pier and float is nearing completion.
We would also like to thank Boothbay sailmaker Mike Bartles for generously donating a used sail to support our work on the island.
Our season begins June 13 with Island Open-Up Work Day. We are currently recruiting volunteers, and interested individuals can connect with us through our website at KBIL.org
As we welcome new volunteers, people should know there are many ways to help beyond island workdays. We also need volunteers interested in publicity, communications, and administrative support — opportunities that may be a great fit for a variety of skills and interests.
We are expanding our educational programming and seeking financial support to help make these opportunities accessible to all students, regardless of their ability to pay.
In short, Burnt Island is stronger, more active, and better organized than it has been in many years. We invite the community to join us by volunteering, visiting the island, and supporting our work.
