BRWD crowned Maine's Best Tasting Water
Boothbay Region Water District (BRWD) was declared Maine’s Best Tasting Water during Maine Rural Water Association’s 45th annual Conference & Trade Show Dec. 11.
The competition pitted water districts from across the state against one another other in two categories: water treated with a disinfectant (such as chlorine) and water without a disinfectant. BRWD cinched this year's disinfectant title by a half-point. The district also won the category in 2021.
The winners then go against each other for a final round, and an overall champion is declared. BRWD will go on to represent the state in the National Taste Test in Washington, D.C. in February.
General Manager Weston Alley said the crew is ecstatic about the achievement, especially as it is uncommon for disinfected water to win the head-to-head. "Our treatment guys take a lot of pride in what they do," he said.
In a press release from Bradley Sawyer, deputy director of the Maine Rural Water Association on Dec. 15, he stated, "The award is particularly meaningful as it coincides with Weston Alley’s first year as general manager. Weston’s leadership, and dedication to best practices have played a significant role in the District’s success. His first year at the helm was marked by strong performance and a continued focus on delivering safe, high-quality drinking water to the community.
"He stated, 'Managing a surface-water drinking water supply requires constant vigilance, strong watershed stewardship, and advanced treatment practices, particularly in a changing regulatory and environmental landscape. This recognition reflects the Boothbay Region Water District’s commitment to protecting our source of supply while meeting those challenges through careful planning, continued investment in infrastructure, and the dedication of our staff. We are proud of what this says about our system, our water source, and the team that works every day to deliver safe, high-quality drinking water to our community.'"
The District was also aided by the wisdom, experience, and mentorship of John Orne, whose guidance has helped ensure a smooth transition and sustain operational success. The collaboration between Mr. Alley’s leadership and Mr. Orne’s institutional knowledge has proven to be a winning combination, benefiting both the District and its customers.
“The team at the Boothbay Region Water District has been outstanding for many years. From the foundation that former superintendent Jon Ziegra helped build to the team today, they represent the best in the drinking water industry.” said Sawyer, “We are excited to see them at the national taste test in February and wish them the best of luck.”
Chairman of the BRWD board of trustees Gerry Gamage added, "We've got a good operation and a good crew, and they deliver."
This year’s judges were Amy Lachance, Maine Drinking Water Program director; Nick Rico, Wells Sanitary District superintendent and Maine Rural Water Association board member; and Rebecca Labranche, A&L Laboratory director.
