Bright lights, small town

Well, Wiscasset, if your presidential results, with two votes separating the top two, weren’t enough excitement less than a week after a $3 million lottery ticket was sold here, you know how to make a June-like early November even more exciting.

Near press time Monday, Wiscasset Middle High School’s assistant principal-athletic director Warren Cossette sent us an email announcement for “Wiscasset Wonderland of Lights of Hope.” What? And wow. The pandemic is a dark time that needs wearing masks and avoiding crowds; but a community lights effort could bring some much needed seasonal cheer, and reinforce what everyone who has been here a minute knows: Townspeople are resilient and lift one another up with hope.

They’ve done it throughout the pandemic, with bell-ringing, signs and more. They’ve graduated a class at Wiscasset Speedway, hosted another graduating class at Wiscasset Municipal Airport, pulled off a Scarecrowfest and Halloween, and started the timely event, Walk Around Wiscasset.

So let’s cheer on and be part of the Wonderland of Lights of Hope, a timely, kind and fun idea. Participate big, or small, with meaning to it all. And thank you to the student council and other groups who have come together on it.
