BRHS mock election results
Boothbay Region High School held mock elections the morning of Super Tuesday. Students used their iPads to vote on a website coordinated by BRHS technology integrator, Barbara Greenstone.
After the 230 votes were in and polls closed, results showed the Democratic candidates were favored in most of all the races, with a close showdown between local candidates, Stephanie Hawke and Bruce MacDonald.
The results
In the presidential race, President Barack Obama won with 115 votes against Mitt Romney’s 66. Jill Stein of the Green Party received 40 votes while Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 9 votes.
In the U.S. Senate Race the Independent Angus King won with 94 votes. The race for runner-up was a close contest between Democrat Cynthia Dill’s 33 votes and Republican Charlie Summer’s 32 votes.
In the race for U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Democrat Chellie Pingree defeated Jon Courtney, 136 votes to 39.
The state senate race was tighter with incumbent Chris Johnson taking 95 votes against Les Fossel’s 72 votes.
The tightest contest at the high school was the state representative race. Democratic incumbent Bruce MacDonald narrowly edged Stephanie Hawke by 10 votes, 96 to 86.
On Question 1 to allow marriage licenses to same-sex couples, students voted yes by a margin of 126 to 52.
Greenstone said she designed the mock election website (powered by Google) to help students get familiar with the election process. The website featured ballot information and political resources about each candidate, as well as real-time links to news outlets covering the national election.
Greenstone said not everybody voted because she wanted to give the students the right to abstain. Out of 233 students currently enrolled at BRHS, 230 voted, a 98 percent turnout.
