BRHS math team wraps up season
In a spirited competition among the members of the Seahawk math team, junior Kate Campbell showed her acumen at trivia and prevailed over all team members to claim the exalted Genius Trophy, a genuine work of art constructed from materials hanging around coaches Peter and Nancy Gilchrist's garage. The questions themselves included: (1) What is the capital of Belarus? (Minsk); (2) If every half-step from middle C to high B is stroked on a keyboard, how many total notes are played? (12); (3) How many diagonals can be drawn inside a regular 19-sided polygon? (152); (4) How many sheets of paper are in a quire? (25); and (5) How many herbs and spices are in KFC's secret recipe? (11).
The contest is a decompression meeting to cap the very successful math team season and Campbell joins a long list of previous "Boothbay Geniuses." The second and third place contestants this year were senior Emily Densmore and junior Duncan Hardwick.
BRHS Principal Tricia Campbell paid a surprise visit to the math team during the competition to congratulate everyone and award the team members with academic honors certificates.
