Boothbay Region Historical Society Harbor Lights open house Dec. 1

Tue, 11/20/2018 - 7:15am

All are welcome! Each year, the historical society is pleased to host a community open house during the Harbor Lights festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its museum at 72 Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor. Stop in, get warm, and browse two full floors of displays highlighting life in the Boothbay region. Vintage decorations, historical photographs and postcards, and sounds of the season will help set the holiday mood, along with hot mulled drinks, our signature teas, and an array of holiday finger foods and desserts. Check out the holiday sale table and buy a raffle ticket for several specially themed gift baskets. Local historian Barbara Rumsey will be on hand to chat and answer research questions.

During this year’s holiday open house, the society will also present its latest exhibit featuring uniforms worn by community members as they participated in local activities: Harry Pinkham’s community band uniform, Olive McKay Wright’s nursing school cape from St. Andrews Hospital in the 1930s, and an early Knights of Pythias uniform worn by Charles Thomas Orne of West Boothbay Harbor. These items will be on display until next spring.

An exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I will run through the end of the year. On display is a uniform with Victory Medal worn in France by Raymond Pennoyer, a Victory Medal and documents from the life of Harriett Delamere, RN, who also served in France, and an edition of the Boothbay Register announcing the Armistice. Did one of your family members serve in the armed forces or medical staff during this conflict? Please share your stories.

The museum is open year-round, Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. Barbara Rumsey is available at the museum on Saturdays or by appointment.
