Boothbay Region Garden Club installs new officers at annual meeting
The Boothbay Region Garden Club held its 92nd annual meeting and luncheon on June 14 at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. The first order of business was the installation of our 2023-2025 elected officers.
President Irene Fowle; Vice President Kevin Bowler; Recording Secretary Deanna Clarkson; Treasurer Sandy Abernathy; and Directors: Linda Bonin, Linda Redman, Gloria Wakefield.
The club wishes to thank our outgoing President Gloria Wakefield for her service and outstanding leadership over her two year term and we are happy that Gloria will remain as a director for the club.
Following the ceremony, members enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon. Next up was our featured program presenter, Martha Blakeslee, who shared her experience as a florist at the White House from 2005 to 2010. She then became the chief floral designer at the British Ambassador’s residence. During that period, she also worked in the Office of the Curator at the White House, assisting with collection management. Martha gave a fascinating presentation, and we look forward to having her back at a future Garden Club meeting that is open to the public!
We invite Boothbay peninsula locals to join the Garden Club. The mission of the club is to promote interest in the art and practice of gardening, education, and beautification of the Boothbay region. We provide public buildings with window boxes, wreaths and plants and maintain many public gardens in the area. Scholarships are provided for YMCA camperships and to college students who want to further their education in environmental studies.
When you join a local garden club, you will have opportunities to visit public gardens, greenhouses and nurseries, and many amazing private gardens in Maine to get ideas for your own garden spaces. Garden clubs are the place to go to learn about plants, garden design, flower arranging and more! Experienced members and professionals are eager to share their knowledge through programs, workshops, and courses.
The BRGC and other nearby clubs host events throughout the year featuring lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities, food and fun! From native plants and conservation to ornamentals and vegetables, there is something for everyone!
