Boothbay Harbor resident Ed Tibbetts, 65, was killed in St. Augustine, Florida the morning of April 2. Tibbetts and wife Kathy, 63, were crossing the A1A highway on foot near The Reef restaurant when they were hit by a van driven by a 17-year-old male from Warsaw, Indiana, said Florida Highway Patrol’s Master Sergeant Dylan Bryan.

The Tibbettses were rushed to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine where Ed was pronounced dead. Kathy was taken to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

The van’s driver and five passengers were all wearing seat belts and were not injured, said Bryan. The passengers, all from Indiana, were 14, 15, 16, 16 and 16 years old.

According to Kathy Tibbetts’ brother, Richard Hyson, Kathy may have suffered a broken arm; she was put in a cast. She also was “bruised up pretty badly,” said Hyson on Sunday.

He said the couple was staying at a campground near where the accident occurred.

“It’s not really clear what happened,” said Hyson. He said Kathy was released from the hospital and returned to the campground where fellow campers were taking care of their dog.

The Tibbettses owned Atlantic Edge Lobster on Atlantic Avenue in Boothbay Harbor for 19 years before selling the business on Jan. 1, 2021.
