Boothbay Harbor resident named student of the year

Shelby Neuschwanger of Boothbay Harbor has been selected as “Student of the Year” at Central Maine Community College (CMCC). She and six other Maine community college students were honored recently for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a ceremony in Augusta hosted by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees.
The award winners were selected by college faculty and staff. Each of the students will be awarded a John H. Lapoint, Jr. Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. Lapoint was president of UF Strainrite in Lewiston and a trustee of the Maine Community College System. After his death in 1995, his widow, Jana Lapoint, served on the board from 1995 to 2006 and helped establish the fund for the annual awards.
Neuschwanger is a native of Germany who moved to Maine to live with her grandparents so she could attend college in the United States. After earning her GED, completing a college transitions course, and getting her driver’s license (all in three months) she enrolled at CMCC.
A high honors student and member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, she has served as an orientation leader, student executive assistant, and campus tour guide. Fluent in two languages, Neuschwanger will attend the University of Maine this fall to pursue a degree in international business.
