The town is buzzing again as the tourist season has begun. What brings visitors to Maine? Is it our 3,478 miles of coastline, 3,166 islands, or our 67 lighthouses? Perhaps it's our vast forests and parks.
Some like our small towns, lobster rolls, and blueberry pie. Others are interested in our history and funny accents. Most visitors have heard of Maine's thriller writer Stephen King, but let me share with you a few of Maine's mystery authors whose stories will give you a real taste of Maine.
Paul Doiron: His protagonist is Game Warden Mike Bowditch who will take you through the woods. There are 17 books in this series. The latest “Storm Tide.” At last count there were 157 holds on it at our local library.
Bruce Coffin: His original series followed Portland’s Detective Sgt. John Byron as he investigated murder in the city. Try “Among the Shadows.” His new series takes you into the wilderness areas of Maine and features Detective Brock Justice. His latest is “Bitter Fall.”
Tess Gerritsen: Famous for “Rizzoli and Isles” and medical thrillers. For a taste of the sea try her most recent “Summer Guests” and “Spy Coast.”
Gerry Boyle: His mysteries follow reporter Jack McMorrison and his nose for crime. Try “Damaged Goods.”
Barbara Ross: Writes cozy mysteries, all set in Coastal Maine. She is known for her “Clam Bake” series. Her two latest “Torn Asunder” and “Easter Basket.”
Matt Cost: He writes the “Clay Wolfe/Port Essex” mysteries. Wolfe, a retired Boston homicide detective returns home to Maine to open a private detective dgency. Start with #1 “Wolfe Trap.”
There are so many more that I could add to this list but time and space curtails me.
Happy reading mystery lovers!
