If you recall, I last wrote that the Buzz was taking a hiatus post Labor Day until the Columbus/Indigenous Day spectacular. Well, thanks to Linda Hultin, you have a bonus Buzz! Linda and Thomas just returned from travels to the Emerald Isle and Linda was no doubt inspired by wordsmiths such as Joyce and Wilde when submitting the following...

“It is once again that time of year when the sun comes up a little later and there is a slight crispness in the air to accompany the crisp apples you picked in the orchard yesterday. There are fewer boats in the mooring field and each week one or two more disappear. Bayville’s sounds of kids swimming and playing have disappeared for the season until next summer and have been replaced by the buzzing of chain saws and the banging of hammers as necessary projects are completed in, on and around the cottages.

“Our pink friend Philbert was recently found at the Valhalla Shores swimming pool without a valid 2026 pool pass. He was unceremoniously kicked out and last seen in the mooring field at the Mucci mooring. Work on the refurbishment of the tennis court has begun thanks to generous donations of many who want to continue to see Barry Gilchrist’s legacy continue on for many more years. The fence and fence posts were recently removed by Phil and Alton with assistance from Kevin Keegan, Phil Robitaille and Mark Spencer. You could hear Phil and Alton channeling their inner Will Rogers spirit belting out “Don’t Fence Me In” from quite a distance, as they were taking down the fence. For some reason there is a large divot in the lawn by the tennis court. Everyone is looking towards Phil, but he claims innocence. Sources tell us that he was looking for buried treasure. We have no information on the success of this treasure hunt at press time.

“The crows are also still making their presence known as they flit from tree to dock and back to tree. Squawking loudly to each other and the eagles. Unfortunately, these only partially migrate, so they will likely be sticking around for a while longer, if they choose to leave at all. Can we blame them for wanting to linger around Bayville as they do? On other bird news, there are still a couple of hummingbirds flitting about, but thy may be traveling through and not our usual summer residents. Also, the turkeys have been noticeably absent this year. Is this because it was so incredibly dry this summer?”

Thank you for all that Linda - great stuff! Yes, the court complex construction continues! Several trees were also removed by the aforementioned crew. The tree's limbs or roots were going to impact the courts and/or the playground, so it made sense to get rid of them before the new surface was in place. For those who don't remember, Barry Gilchrist was instrumental in bringing the tennis court to Bayville. This is on land donated by the Fletcher Family - hence Fletcher Park. As we all know, Sue Fletcher Bradley passed this summer and her kids really kicked off the very successful “Drive for 25" in her memory. Thank you to everyone who donated and who worked hard to make this happen!
