American Legion Post 36
Just a reminder, the famous American Legion breakfast is back! We resume for the season this Sunday, April 8 from 7 to 9 a.m. So, I am hoping we have a great turnout with old friends returning and new friends experience our culinary delights for the first time.
The Vietnam Veterans Day on the 29th was a huge success. A great turnout at the VA Togus and at the State House. Vietnam veterans were honored for their service during this period. They were honored in two ways. The state provided Certificates of Appreciation along with a Vietnam Coin from a Grateful State and the Federal Government Vietnam remembrance lapel pin was provided. For all veterans the state would like to honor you for your service regardless of when you served. The application for your Certificates of Appreciation can be found at the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services website (www.maine.gov/veterans under “recognitions.”) Or, I would be happy to get the certificate for you. Either way, you will need your discharge document (DD 214). If you went into the service from Maine, it is likely the state has your DD 214 and you won’t need to submit it with your application. But, if from away, you will need to provide a copy. Don’t have a copy? I can help you get it from the National Archives. If you are a veteran, even if you don’t want to be recognized or don’t have any need for the services of the VA that you may be eligible for, you should have a DD 214. One reason might be that Lowes requires the DD 214 to enter you into their system for the 10 percent veteran discount. Once into their system you will only have to provide your telephone number to get your discount. Another reason is that in event your family would like you to have military honors when the time comes, they will need that document.
Save the date for the American Legion Auxiliary’s first annual craft fair May 19. To reserve a table, contact Mary Ellison at Legion Hall (633-4487) or maryellison@yahoo.com.
Once again, the Boothbay Region Lobstermen will be hosting lobster boat rides tentatively set for June 10 for all veterans. Past Commander Phil Chapman is again coordinating this effort. Stand by for more details.
Also, save the date for the annual Legion Yard Sale, once again on the Boothbay Common July 21.
Monday, April 9 is the monthly American Legion and Auxiliary meeting. Meatball subs and salad will be served at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting starting immediately after dinner. A veteran and not in the Legion (yet)? come join us for dinner and the meeting and learn what we are all about.
Remember, this Sunday is the all you can eat breakfast at the Legion Hall. See you all there!
