Is your hot water tank HOT?

Conventional wisdom says your water heater has to be hot – how else would it transform cold, incoming water into the stuff hot showers are made of? But conventional wisdom isn’t always wise, and this little truism comes with an important caveat: your hot water tank should only be hot on the inside.

Something has clearly gone wrong with the hot water tank pictured here. In a perfect world, the heavy metal shell is separated from an interior water tank by a thick layer of insulating material like polyurethane foam. In this case, there must be a break in that insulation, because the outer tank is registering 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Ouch!
