Riding blind

She arrived at the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Boothbay Harbor on August 15 at 1:30 p.m., sitting on a piece of sheepskin atop the gas tank of a silver and black Honda motorcycle. Balancing on all four paws, she patiently waited for her master's return from the store.

Misty, a border collie, sat on the bike until Jerome Hebert emerged to take her to a friend's home in Newcastle. Thankfully for her, it was the last leg of the journey.

Together they traveled 400 miles from North Bay, Ontario, to Boothbay. Through fair and rough weather, Misty remained seated in front of Herbert.

Hebert said border collies are very intelligent. "In one account that I read about, an owner wanted to play Frisbee with his border collie, but it was raining outside. The collie went into the man's bedroom and returned with a photograph of a Frisbee." Another example was of a blind border collie that won sheep herding contests three years in a row.

Misty is also blind, as a result of sun damage from another trip Hebert made to southern climates.

She has been a faithful friend to Hebert for more than 13 years. They've shared many miles, memories and a few white hairs as they've traveled from place to place – the retiree and the blind little border collie.
