One of the last of her generation, Barbara Leonard died Monday evening, April 22, 2024, at St. Andrews Gregory Wing.

Born on Nov. 4, 1927, Barbara spent summers in Maine with her grandparents when she was a child, and her love for Maine was a constant throughout her long life. She married the love of her life, Edward D. (Ted) Leonard Jr. in 1962 and began summering on Spruce Point in a cottage her husband’s father had built. Ted and Barbara lived much of the year in Massachusetts where she rode and cared for horses and made many friends through her love of dogs. After Ted died in 1974, Barbara moved to Spruce Point permanently, winterizing and fitting out the cottage for year round living. Her two Dobermans were her beloved companions.

She returned to her nursing career, often volunteering to work on Christmas Day so the younger nurses could be with their families.

Barbara was an avid Meals on Wheels volunteer well into her nineties, and when advised she should think of retiring from it, said she couldn’t because her people depended on her for visits. Indeed she spent twice as much time as many in doing her rounds and her visits.

Barbara was a faithful member of St. Columba Episcopal Church and took a turn doing flower arrangements for Fall. She would gather beautiful fall leaves and place them under her rugs to dry, and they were always perfect.

She was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain friends and family for lunches or full course dinners. She was a talented interior decorator and had a business, Barbara Leonard Designs, for many years.

Barbara was a friend to everyone; she was predeceased by two special friends Laddie and Lola with whom she went on many adventures and of whom she spoke in her last days, no doubt hatching plans for their next meeting. She was also predeceased by her husband, Ted, and her stepson Edward D. (Ted) Leonard III.

Barbara is survived by her son Nathaniel (Frosty) Leonard and wife Eve; grandson Teddy and granddaughter Meagan; daughter Patricia Leonard; stepson Michael Leonard and wife Sissy; granddaughters Sarah and Lisle; and stepdaughter Linda Leonard. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Sandra Leonard.

\Barbara asked for no service, but friends can remember her with gifts to the Midcoast Humane Society, Edgecomb campus, or The Community Center in Boothbay Harbor.
