He was a graduate of Amherst College (class of 1943) but left in 1941 until the end of the war to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard.

    He worked at several of the area boat-yards as a painter. He built his own skiffs and lobstered. He also worked as a carpenter with Maurice Sherman.
