Boothbay wins at Mountain Valley, plays Hall-Dale tonight
During the first six games of the regular season, Boothbay was able to out-muscle most teams simply by virtue of physical size and strength. However, a January 2 visit to Mountain Valley proved just how balanced the Lady Seahawks can be as their guards' steady ball handling and sharpshooting held off the Falcons 50-47. See complete scoreboard below.
Lady Seahawks outscored their opponents in the first quarter 15-9. It looked as though the Falcons had no answer for Abby McLellan's six steals in eight minutes, but they regained composure in the second half and shrank the deficit to two points, trailing 30-32 going into the final period.
For the entire fourth quarter it was never more than a four-point spread as the Lady Seahawks, guided by their versatile guards, fended off the Falcons with combined efforts from Sarah Caron's 15 points, Morgan Crocker's 12 points, and Abby McLellan's 11.
Head Coach Tanner Grover said Boothbay lost some momentum in the second half, allowing Mountain Valley to hang around. He said even though the Class B Falcons are 2-5 for the season, their record is misleading to how good they actually are. “They're a very big team, and a very physical team,” he said. “This was the first time that they had been healthy all year.” Brooke Dolloff, a 5-foot-10-inch junior, led Mountain Valley in scoring with 15 points.
Boothbay (5-2) is now tied with Madison (5-2) for first place in the Western Maine Class C Conference and Coach Tanner Grover said patience and ball handling on the offensive end are really taking shape, having come off a 44-40 win over rival Waynflete during the holiday tournament.
“I think, moving forward, we really need to sure up how we're rebounding the ball, especially defensively, and then continue to make an effort to pound the ball inside,” he said.
The Lady Seahawks tip off against ninth-seeded Hall-Dale Bulldogs (2-4) at 7 p.m., January 4, at Boothbay Region High School. Grover said he expects a hard fight from Hall-Dale. The Bulldogs won the Western Class C title last year, but fell to Central High School in the state championship game. Hall-Dale returns Allison Crockett, a power post player, and their main shooter, Natasha Brown, but graduated three seniors, including their star player, Carylanne Wolfington, who now plays for Colby College. “This is a team we definitely can't take lightly. They're well coached, and they should be a good game on Friday,” Grover said.
