Talk on trash in our oceans July 22
On Friday, July 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Linekin Bay Resort in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Rachael Miller co-founder/executive director of the Rozalia Project will talk about the huge problem of marine debris in our oceans and what they’re doing to clean it up. Miller’s informative and dynamic presentation will include conversation about microfiber pollution and an innovative solution for this problem that they have recently developed.
Since its inception in 2010, the Rozalia Project has been working on the problem of marine debris by working surface to seafloor and from multiple angles, prevention through education, remediation (cleanup), innovation and doing solutions-based research.
According to Miller, the problem of marine debris is serious. “The presence of non-biodegradable debris in the water is a documented hazard to marine life and humans alike. Plastics, rather than biodegrading, tend to break up into microscopic pieces suspended in the water column and then are ingested by all sea creatures. There is evidence that the toxins released by these plastics are introduced into the human food chain this way.”
As the executive director, Miller leads the program in vision, program development, putting together a great team, partnerships and working toward achieving Rozalia Project's mission of protecting the ocean. Miller holds a USCG 50 ton Master's license and captains the 60’ sailing research vessel, American Promise, trains remotely operated vehicle pilots for VideoRay and is a member of the U.S. Sailing Training Committee.
Her academic background is in marine studies and underwater archaeology, which she studied at Brown University. She lives in Vermont and loves to ski as much as sail.
The Rozalia Project will be at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center (BSSC) at the Ocean Point Marina in East Boothbay, Maine from Wednesday, July 20 until Saturday, July 23. During that time, Miller and her crew aboard the American Promise will work with youth ages 5 – 15 on collecting, sorting and brainstorming solutions to end the relentless problem of marine debris. The week will end with presentations by the BSSC participants to their parents, family and friends at their lunchtime cookout. This is the Rozalia Project’s fourth summer at BSSC.
