Southport students present Maine topics at library
What a day it was at the Southport Library on Tuesday, April 12. About 30 friends and family gathered to hear students from Southport School grades 4 through 6 each give a short talk on various topics about Maine history, science and geography.
The presentation was a culmination of a library project sponsored by the Southport Library Aides this winter. The nine students in grades 4-6 used their computers at school to research books in the library catalogue, visited the library once a month to find the books and then take them back to school to use for various projects designed by their teacher, Shawn Gallagher. Since the school does not have an extensive library, the students use the Southport Memorial Library as if it were their own school library. Librarian Linda Brewer often helps them find books they need for school projects, as well as books they might want to read at home.
Each student had made a signboard displaying written work, photographs and/or art to describe their individual projects which included, lobsters, lighthouses, Acadia, Joshua Chamberlain, Baxter State Park, Maine animals, Native Americans, Maine economy and family ancestors. All were well rehearsed and well informed. Parents, siblings, neighbors and friends all applauded the fine performances, and the efforts of their teacher who gave them much guidance and support.
The Southport School will continue this program through the rest of the school year. Youngsters from grades kindergarten through three also come to the library once a month to find books and hear a story read by Children’s Librarian Kathy Barter.
Library Aide Jane Mulholland, also a member of the school board, arranged the program, assisted by President of the Aides Jane Lunt, and Aides Nan Jackson, Anne Gobes and Helen Meserve.
