New digs downtown

There will be some new spots up for rent in downtown Boothbay Harbor this summer.
Don Kingsbury, owner of Two Salty Dogs, is renovating the building at the corner of McKown Street and Boothbay House Hill, across the street from his shop.
Kingsbury said the three-story house, at 36 McKown Street, was built in 1890, but when all is said and done, the interior will be brand new. “We're gutting the place,” he said.
In the building that previously housed Coastal Shipping there will be a space for a retail shop and a small office on the first floor. Upstairs will be a two-story apartment that will be renovated in the fall.
The interior of the smaller space, at 14 Boothbay House Hill, which is attached to the rear of the three-story building, has been torn out, according to Kingsbury, and is being transformed into a retail space on the ground floor, and an upscale loft apartment above.
“There's a million-dollar view to the harbor from the deck,” he said of the rounded deck off the apartment.
The loft features copper fixtures and sink in the bathroom, with Maine slate from Monson for the vanity counter and floor. The shower, with river stone walls and floor, and slate trim, was built by Joe Norton of Norton Stone & Tile, with help from his co-worker, Willie Morton. “I do, like, 50 percent,” Morton said, with a smile.
The river stone walls are a labor-intensive process, according to Kingsbury. There is a small black slate corner shelf about a foot up from the floor. “That's for women to put their feet up on to shave their legs,” Norton said.
The sliding door to the bathroom, made from the original barn door, has a wrought iron handle.
In the open kitchen area there is a striking blue granite counter and back splash. Kingsbury said the blue granite, from Brazil, was an indulgence, “It's absolutely stunning.”
The apartment will be rented by the week or days.
Kingsbury said there will be parking space added, and he will also be renting space on the lawn, for vendors. There are hook-ups for water and electricity.
