Granted, the Boothbay region had two basketball teams playing in the Class C South tournament at the Augusta Civic Center on Monday, but the turnout was pretty awesome considering the two games were quarterfinals and being played in the afternoon (although it was a holiday for some). The Maine Principal's Association loves it when Boothbay Region High School has a team in the tournament -- and it has had at least one more often than not over the past 40 years.
We are great supporters of our basketball teams. Hopefully it is not due just due to the success. Hopefully it is because we love the sport, we are there to support our kids and that it is the right thing to do.
Before the games on Monday, I had a chance to talk with my college buddy, Bruce Cooper, high school coach of the one and only Cindy Blodgett (for those who don't know her, Google it!) and a longtime worker during the tournaments at the ACC. He told me that at one of the Class AA South girls games, he counted 68 fans sitting on one side of the gym. It was played on the weekend when a lot of people weren't working. He said several people complained that they had to travel up from the Portland area to watch the games in the ACC.
"Let them talk to the fans of Forest Hills, Vinalhaven and others coming in from the small towns in Maine. Those fans have to travel the back roads and for many more miles," said Coop. "I-95 was one road from Portland the last time I looked!"
So it was great to see the sea of blue and gold from my vantage point along the baselines. Keep it up Boothbay fans! And be safe traveling those back roads to the ACC. We want you back to cheer on the Seahawks for years to come.
And good luck to the Seahawks on Thursday!
