Curtain up at the Lincoln Theater
This week, along with Grand Slam tennis and an emotionally, psychologically, existentially compelling film, Lincoln Theater is pleased this week to present three world-class theatrical performances captured live on stage. From on tour in Australia, Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones star in “Driving Miss Daisy.”
From Stratford-Upon-Avon, Sir Antony Sher, one of England’s most Shakespeare-steeped theatrical knights treads the boards as Falstaff in “Henry IV.” And finally, from the same day in London, the celebrated revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Olivier Award-winning comedy will be broadcast from London’s National Theatre.
“Driving Miss Daisy”
Starring Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see two iconic Broadway and Hollywood veterans in one of the most enduring and popular stage plays of our time. Driving Miss Daisy tells the affecting story of the decades-long relationship between an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her compassionate African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn. Their iconic tale of pride, changing times and the transformative power of friendship has warmed the hearts of millions worldwide. Plays Wednesday, June 4 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, June 5 at 2 p.m.
Royal Shakespeare Company: “Henry IV Part I” (2:45)
From Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s home, comes this latest production from the RSC. With his crown under threat from enemies both foreign and domestic, Henry IV prepares for war. Having deposed the previous king, he is only too aware of the tenuousness of his position, and of the price to be paid if he falters. Son, Hal and his friend, Falstaff are thrust into the brutal reality of the battlefield, where Hal must confront his responsibilities to family and throne. Plays Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. and encores Thursday, June 26 at 7 p.m. Presented in partnership with Charter Oak Capital Management.
“Locke” (R, 1:25)
Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) has worked diligently, dedicating himself to the job that he loves and the family he adores. On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul. Plays Friday, June 6 , Saturday, June 7, Sunday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, June 12 at 2 p.m. Presented in partnership with Peapod Jewelry.
Roland Garros The French Open
The premier clay court tennis championship event in the world and the second of four annual Grand Slam tournaments; the other three being the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam event held on clay. National Theatre Live: “A Small Family Business” (2:40)
Jack McCracken is a man of principle in a corrupt world. But not for long. Moments after taking over his father-in-law’s business he discovers his extended family to be thieves and adulterers, looting the business from their suburban homes. Rampant self-interest takes over and comic hysteria builds to a macabre climax. A riotous exposure of entrepreneurial greed by Olivier Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn.
