Windjammer Days 2014

Parade Captains Dwight and Duane Lewis

Thu, 06/05/2014 - 9:00am

Twin brothers Duane and Dwight Lewis both served as bridge tenders on the Southport swing bridge for 45 years. Dwight retired in July of 2012 and Duane in 2013.

How do you get a gig like that? In the Lewis brothers' case, it was inherited from their father, Norman Lewis, who began tending the bridge over Townsend Gut in 1940.

After the Street Parade Committee chose "Celebrating Our Community and Maritime History" as the 2014 theme, Friends of Windjammer Days board member Mark Gimbel had an idea.

It seemed only fitting that in honor of Dwight and Duane's longtime service they be named Captains of the Street Parade.

That idea was met with unanimous support — and a bit of hootin' and hollerin' to boot.

Dwight Lewis, Duane Lewis, we salute you!
