Haskell and Wolf vie for one-year seat, Griffin and Warren run unopposed
Voting in Boothbay Harbor will be on Friday, May 2, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Town Office. Town Meeting will be held the next morning at 9 a.m. at the Boothbay Region Elementary School. During Town Meeting, the selectmen will be sworn into their positions.
Four people are running for selectmen this year: Jay Warren and Denise Griffin, both whom are running for their own seats unopposed, and Dr. Wendy Wolf and Christopher Haskell, who are both running for the one-year term seat vacated by Robert Splaine in 2013. Current Board Chairman Bill Hamblen and selectman Russ Hoffman keep their seats, as they were voted in last year.
Haskell, a native of Boothbay Harbor, is running to give the younger generation a voice in government. The 29-year-old graduated from Boothbay Region High School in 2003, and he is a board member of the Boothbay Region Health and Wellness Foundation, and a member of the Knights of Pythias Boothbay Lodge 32.
“It's our town, too,” Haskell said during an interview on February 26. “We need to give younger people a reason to stay. And anything that helps businesses and brings people into the community is a good thing.”
Haskell is in favor of the projects the selectmen and town are currently involved in, and is a big supporter of the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.
Wolf has been living in Boothbay Harbor since 2001, and feels that every member of a community has a responsibility to serve in some way. She believes strongly in attracting businesses to the region and capitalizing on the knowledge of our locals, many of whom came here to retire after years of experience in their fields.
“We can work together with the chamber to attract businesses to our region, not just for the summer but year-round,” Wolf said during an interview on March 13. “Where are we headed? We have a large population of older people who are creative and experienced in a number of fields. There is so much talent there.”
Griffin, who lives in Boothbay Harbor and works at The First National Bank in Damariscotta, is the current vice chairman of the Boothbay Harbor Board of Selectmen. She is running for reelection to continue the progress the current board has made toward making the town a better place for tourists and locals alike.
“I want to continue that forward momentum,” Griffin said during an interview on March 13.
Griffin wants to complete the current projects and expand into more while maintaining the financial stability of Boothbay Harbor and making sure taxes do not increase.
“The town is in really good financial health, and we need to maintain that while keeping taxes low,” Griffin said during the same interview.
Jay D. Warren, a third-generation Boothbay Harbor resident, has worked for the town of Boothbay Harbor for 40 years as a firefighter. He has been an EMT with the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service (director for three of those years), and is also running for reelection.
He wishes to complete the projects the selectmen are currently involved in. Above all, he says his most important duty is to represent the taxpaying citizens of Boothbay Harbor and protect their interests.
“In Boothbay Harbor everyone is family,” Warren said during an interview February 25. “We have a duty to the citizens that vote us into office, they trust us to help run their town. Seven years ago, this town was broke. We have a responsibility to make sure that never happens again.”
All Boothbay Harbor citizens: Don't forget to vote on Friday, May 2, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Town Office.
