Spofford and Maddocks picking up national attention
What might seem like the normal response from a small town community has caught the interest of a national news syndicate.
Melissa Harris-Perry, host of MSNBC's weekend news show may soon be featuring a story about Jared Spofford and Jason Maddocks, who have helped out the Leonard family in the past few weeks. Emma Leonard, 17, was in a serious car collision on February 11.
Harris-Perry's show, which airs from 10 a.m. to noon on weekends, features a segment called “Foot Soldiers.” The segment highlights acts of kindness and people doing good in their community.
The show's production assistant Traci Tillman contacted the Boothbay Register on February 20. Tillman said they were interested in running the story on Saturday February 22, but the story was postponed. Tillman said they still might contact community members next week and subsequently broadcast the story at a later date.
Another media outlet is running the story as well. WGME News in Portland interviewed Spofford February 21. The story will run on the Friday evening news at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Leonard is currently recovering at Maine Medical Center in Portland. A fund has been set up to accept donations to help the family with expenses; as of Friday, Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m., the fund had received $6,555 from 114 people.
