Cemetery association meeting October 19
The North Edgecomb Cemetery Association's fall meeting is this Saturday, Oct. 19, 10 a.m. at the Edgecomb Town Hall. All are welcome.
The Edgecomb Historical Society's September meeting generated three exciting future projects:
- To survey and write a book about Edgecomb's cemeteries and small graveyards. Perhaps EHS could join forces with the North Edgecomb Cemetery Association and other Edgecomb cemetery organizations?
- A crying need to organize the EHS collection, which at present is crammed in boxes and file drawers in a storage room at the Edgecomb Eddy School. Possibly, digitalizing the collection by taking pictures of the items. Among the items is a microfilm of Moses Davis' Diary, as complete as possible, considering the fragile condition of the original, which is kept at the State Archives in Augusta. It needs to be reproduced in hard copy.
- The annual meeting originally scheduled for September will take place November 21, at the Edgecomb Congregation Church, with a special program presented by members of the Newcastle Historical Society, devoted to the Cochran Wedding Quilt! More details as they develop. The EHS will hold its October 24 meeting at 2 p.m., at Sue Carlson and Ros Strong's house.
The Center for Teaching and Learning is holding its annual open house this coming Sunday, October 20, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Here is an opportunity for the community to tour the school, meet the faculty and find out about the school's outstanding educational program. A second open house is planned for Sunday, February 2. Call CTL at 882-9706 for more information.
Alas, the planned reunion of Salt Marsh School alumni had to be postponed, since the building's floor has presented Tom and Susie with a great many restoration problems. We will regroup, probably late in the spring of 2014.
I just want to celebrate the handful of students Bob Reed and I have rounded up: In addition to ourselves, Bob's brother Herb, Frank Richards, Joyce Pinkham Tuttle, Bob Brown. We are seeking Ed Fairbrother and Florence "Flossie" McLaine. Are there others among my readers who once learned their letters at the little red brick school building on the River Road? Please get in touch with me, at the contact information below!
Keeping an Eye on Edgecomb: Tomorrow, Friday, October 18, at 1 p.m., the Davis Island Grill (aka Bintliff's Ocean Grill aka Muddy Rudder aka Dodge's Inn) and the two associated condominiums will be up for auction once again, along with the Coburn House in Boothbay. The auction will be held at the D.I.G. on Davis Island, run by the Keenan Auction Company of South Portland.
Watch for hearings or public information meetings to come in re the best use of Edgecomb's to date unused 31,000 gallons/day sewer allowance. This is a major issue for the town as a whole to decide. Meanwhile the selectmen have placed the matter of who gets the TIF monies in the hands of a special business court. "We can watch it from afar," said town attorney William Dale.
