Final church supper of the season
The Reed family has announced that an End of Life Service will be held for Veula Hazel Emerson Reed on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Edgecomb Congregational Church. The Reverend Kate Pinkham will conduct the service.
This Saturday, Sept. 28, come to the Edgecomb Congregational Church to delight in traditional baked bean and casseroles. The final supper of the 2013 supper season will start at 5 p.m. and run through 6:30 p.m, or whenever the food runs out, to benefit the water security projects of Church World Service, an international organization assisting communities throughout the world to develop safe drinking water supplies by the construction of sand dams and the drilling and maintenance of community wells.
Cost of the supper for adults, $7, children under 12, $3. The thrift shop will be open at 4:30 p.m. for early arrivals. Visit edgecombchurch@gmail.com for more information.
Claudia Coffin called to tell me that Rite Aid is planning a flu shot clinic at the Edgecomb Town Hall, although the date has not been established. If you are interested, call or visit Claudia, our Town Clerk and Treasurer, at 207-882-7018, during office hours: Mondays, 7 to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Tell her your best days and times; the date will be announced later. Rite Aid will bill your health insurance provider for the shot, which costs $29.99; if you do not have insurance, you can pay direct.

More insights from Sharon Barter regarding the September 12 column: “Leon and Rena Dodge had three children, Helen, Clarence and Lee. I think Helen and Lee both lived away. But Clarence married Lois Hodgdon, and they had a house on the lower end of Cross Point Road. They had two children, Linda Dodge Wood and Alan Dodge. Alan was a chef at Le Garage; he is Leon's grandson. I believe both Linda and Alan still live in Edgecomb.”
Hugh Sherman called me, to straighten out my take on what his great aunt, Chris Nelson, had told me earlier. Mrs. Nelson's mother was Lena Cochran, who married Fred Sherman. They were also Mr. Sherman's grandparents. There were three Sherman children: Christine, Paul Sr. and Roger. Christine's children are Rob and Peter Nelson; Roger's son is Hugh himself and Calvin, who lives in Massachusetts; Paul Sr.'s children are Paul Jr. and Peter. Hugh further notes that properly, William A. Cochran was the elder Willie Cochran, while William W. was the younger, the son. I apologize for automatically using the terms Sr. and Jr. This ends our excursion into genealogy by embroidered names.
A review of the information gained through this column will be presented at the Edgecomb Historical Society meeting today, 2 p.m. at the home of Sue Carlson and Ros Strong, 94 Cross Point Road. Please note that we have changed the location because of Sue's recovery from injuries inflicted by a goat. We will welcome your knowledge of the past and your ideas for the future of the EHS. There will also be a report of the Lincoln County Historical Association's annual gathering of town societies, which was Sunday, Sept. 22.
