Edgecomb Eddy open house September 19
The Edgecomb Eddy School invites parents to an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m., to learn more about your child's education, to get to know Edgecomb Eddy's teachers better, and to learn about this year's curriculum. Everyone should gather in the gym at 6 p.m. for a brief introduction and overview. Then students and parents will go to their appropriate classrooms to meet the teachers.
A big hurrah for this year's Parent-Teacher Club president, who is Nicole McKay. You can reach her at 207-380-5979 or nmckay929@msn.com if you want more information about the school, or to find out what you can do as a volunteer.
Another educational hurrah for Julie Higgins, who has been signed on permanently to teach science to Edgecomb Eddy 4th, 5th and 6th grades, and language arts to the 5th and 6th graders. She graduated from BRHS in 2008, so knows well the ins and outs of this peninsula.
Other hurrahs: Tom Abello crossed the SVCA Salmon Run finish line in 19 minutes 22 seconds. His mother, Amanda Russell, was female runner-up at 28:25. Six-year-old Hannah ran a tight fry run at the same event. Even four-year-old Charlotte won a prize. That explains all the loud panting you've heard from Middle Road.
Eben Blaney's furniture and Susie Stephenson's hooked rugs are among the treasures on display during the Stable Gallery's final show of 2013, on Water Street in Damariscotta. Rev. Bobsie Dudley-Thompson is leading an ambitious five-week seminar on “The Wisdom of Jesus: Transforming Heart and Mind,” at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, beginning Thursday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m.
Sue Carlson's roommate at Miles' re-hab unit has been Gertrude Allen, who has a broken hip. Gertrude is anxious to get out of hospital since she's signed up for two more courses at Coastal Senior College. Way to go, Gertrude Allen!
We Camerons are signed up for a CSC course on the French, the British and the Wabanakis, offered by John Chandler at Hodgdon Green, where Gertrude is presently a resident. The class includes three field trips: to Fort Popham; Fort Pemaquid; and Fort Western. I am also going to Paul Kando's study circle, another CSC offering, devoted to “When the Economy Hits the Fan.”
There is still time to join Coastal Senior College as a member and register for Fall 2013 courses. You can reach the CSC registrar at University College at Rockland, at 207-596-6906, or www.coastalseniorcollege.org. Flowers of the Forest: Let us salute the passing of Mark Munroe, and send our deepest condolences to all his family.
Loosen your belts, people. The final Edgecomb Congregational Church supper of 2013 will be Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at 5 p.m., as usual. And the usual delicious traditional baked beans and accompanying casseroles, breads, beverages, desserts, will be served in the usual abundance. Be sure to run around your yard five times before coming, and remember, “Good Food is Good Fellowship!” Call the church, 207-882-4060, or Gail Boudin, 207-882- 7972, to see how you can help, setting the tables, preparing dishes for the supper, or clearing up afterward.
Sharon Barter, nee Webb, our current mail deliverer, has added to the genealogical lore billowing out of the Cochran Wedding Quilt: “My parents, Arthur and Mary Jane Webb, bought a farm at the dead end of Town Hall Road in 1935 from a Trask family. I remember that one of our kitchen windows had the name ‘Eben Trask’ etched into the glass. So, that may be where Mrs. Eben Trask lived” (column of 8/15). “You mention Leon and Rena Dodge. (They) owned a big farm on Cross Point Road, not far from CTL (column of 8/29). Later, they sold the farm to Phil and Eleanor Goggins, (whose) son Phil Jr. still lives there as far as I know. Leon and Rena then built a house next door and lived there until they died. Later, their son Clarence lived there, but he has passed away, also. (Chef) Alan Dodge is Leon and Rena's grandson.” I am also indebted to Hugh Sherman, who called to straighten me out on the Cochran-Sherman family tree, but his contribution must wait for next column, due to space constraints. In the meantime, here is Row 7 from the Cochran Wedding Quilt's squares from friends of the happy couple: 7.1: Mary Abigail Haggett, 7.2: no name, 7.3: Mrs. Mary Haggett, 7.4: no name, 7.5: Leah W. Dodge, 7.6: no name, 7.7: no name.
The saga of this quilt will be among the agenda items at the coming Edgecomb Historical Society meeting, Thursday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Edgecomb Eddy School conference room. We will also discuss our Industrial/Economic History project, future collaborations with the Newcastle Historical Society, a possible meeting at the Salt Marsh Schoolhouse, and such other topics as are brought to the table by members new and old. All are welcome!
Membership, incidentally, will set you back a whole $5, $10 for a family. Our treasurer is Ruth Bryant, and dues can be sent to the Society at P.O. Box 6, Edgecomb, ME 04556, or brought to the meeting. Bracing myself for the Autumnal Equinox at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net.
