10 ways to use your old newspaper
Well, you've just read one of the two greatest publications in the known universe, the Boothbay Register or the Wiscasset Newspaper. Now what to do with it? Here are a few ideas you might like!
1. Gift wrapping
Newspaper makes great gift wrap. It's inexpensive, totally recyclable, and best of all, you can share your love of the Boothbay Register or Wiscasset Newspaper with the recipient.
2. Mod Podge shoes
Got a boring pair of shoes? Plain color? Jazz em up! Clip out fun bits of stories, pictures, quotes — anything in the paper that catches your eye. Layer them on your shoes with a little bit of Mod Podge. When you like the way the collage looks, cover the whole thing with another layer. You'll have the most unique shoes anywhere you go.
3. Spider whacker
This one is pretty self-explanatory.
4. Fire starter
Stuff crumpled-up bits of newspaper inside an old paper towel tube. Stuff in as much as possible and, if you're really crafty, you can seal the ends with melted wax from a candle.
5. Clean windows and mirrors
For some reason, using newspaper on glass prevents streaks better than paper towels or cloth. The newsprint, while it will probably transfer to your hands, will not end up on the glass. Not recommend for readers of the online edition.
6. Make a hat
Remember making old newspapers into pirate hats? Pass on the skill to your kids. Make up fun stories with them using the hats.
7. Treasure hunt
On a rainy day (especially if you have kids) make a list of things they could find in the paper like the name “Lisa,” something blue-colored, a sailboat, someone smiling, etc. Give them a pair of scissors (blunt, if they are young, please) and everyone who finds them all gets a prize like ice cream with special toppings. And everyone gets ice cream irregardless, including you.
8. Make a tent for your hamster/gerbil/rabbit/guinea pig
Most small animals will probably devour the paper in half the time it takes you to build the tent, of course.
9. Spray shield
Use it as a shield for your nice lawn when spray-painting. Or whitewashing your fence. Or carving a pumpkin. Lots of potential uses on this one.
10. Have fun playing with passersby.
Sit on a bench outside along Townsend Avenue, and appear to read the paper intently while holding it upside-down. If anyone asks about it, tell them it's easier to read this way.
