As you leave your summer vacation, please drop off your remaining food at the Congregational Church in the Harbor to support the Food Pantry,or send a check to the Church, as there is a great need for food at this time. The Playground brick order form, to complete the playground brick walk way, are available by calling Alison Butterworth at 207-633-5196. This ongoing project is to support the care and upkeep of the playground. Thank you all for your support.
Ten people attended the Bee Keeping Information Session at Webster's Cottage this summer. John Webster gave a talk about the importance of honey bees in our world, as well as how to care for a honeybee hive in your back yard. Following the talk, people gathered around the hive to see how bees live and work.
In the Orne’s Candy Store Rock Skipping Contest earlier this summer, Jack Heise of Ocean Point held his record in the adult male division with 12 skips, good job!
On August 19 while returning home we were followed by a gorgeous illuminated moon that kept playing hide ‘n’ seek through the trees, often switching sides, disappearing by dipping below the houses to reappear reflected brightly in Grimes Cove.
Some of the summer and year-round folks have reported injured birds to us and we send them to a relay team that gets them to Avian Haven, a dedicated rehabilitation team deep in the woods in Freedom. The broadtail hawk that we found floundering in the grass on Crocker Road after a concerned resident called us for help has arrived there and is in good hands.
Another reliable volunteer transported it to Avian Haven in two hours. This rescue operation is very professional, utilizing their time and energy to the rescue and release. Therefore they are not open to the public for tours. The next day we had permission to go there as volunteers.
Never have we needed a GPS unit so urgently! After two hours of meandering through the back roads with potholes, some dirt roads, and the last few were as narrow as a driveway, we finally arrived, exhausted and thankful for all the birds, large or small, for their good fortune to be there. Donations are thankfully accepted as they fund the program themselves. We went out to the coast and ate in a pleasant summer restaurant on the shore like tourists.
This column may be the last until I will have completed a left knee replacement surgery on September 27. Two good solid knees at my age will be a real bonus! I plan to rehab nearby my home, but sadly St. Andrews rehabilitation center that was so professional and caring no longer can provide these services.
