A flurry of outdoor activities
The first two weeks of July saw most of our cottages bursting at the seams with family and friends. Whenever the sun decided to shine our beach was filled with all generations enjoying the water and the weather. Now we all need to order good weather for the rest of the season.
The first week of July saw the Repa household overflowing with 15 houseguests. Son Chris, wife Neot, kids Maya, age 7 and twin grandsons, Hillel and Yotam, age 1, delighted them all week.
Some friends of their son also joined them during the latter part of the week. Thanks to the generosity of Larry and Jane Stevenson, Betty's sister, Lyn, her son, Matt, and his two children, Emily, 10, and Peter, 6, were invited to stay in the Stevensons's cottage. Betty was still the chief cook and “bottle washer” for all.
The week was filled with boating trips out to Burnt Island for a family picnic, and a ride in Ted's whaler to town for ice cream. During those three oppressively hot and humid days, the entire family swam, alternatively, at the Y and off our beach. One day, Betty, Ted and Chris's gang also enjoyed the Cabbage Island clambake and, of course, lobsters were a definite part of several menus.
We are all saddened, to learn that Larry and Jane Stevenson, who are much beloved on Juniper Point will be unable to come to Maine this summer. Jane's illness prevents travel at this time. Everyone on the Point will sorely miss them and hopefully when they return next summer we should all plan a big welcome back celebration.
Lynn and Jim Gibbons have packed up after a much too short stay and left the point for their home in California. However they have very luckily planned a return trip in early fall to enjoy the fall colors.
The Stuart household had a gang visiting two weeks ago, and another gang expected this week, including cousins Zeda, Sage and Leighton Stuart. In the meantime, Bob has been busy. He got Dorothy to reluctantly agree to have their cottage on the forthcoming “Cottage Walk.”
Dorothy has now used this as a wedge to get lots of deferred maintenance done. If you visit on the tour, check out the newly painted kitchen, front porch and the new back door on the garage. Bob has been so busy working on the cottage he has not yet completed the varnish on Varuna.
Our tennis director reports our tennis program is in full swing. He offers the information below: The Juniper Point Juggernauts competed valiantly in a match against the Yacht Club this last Friday. Evenly matched, the trade-winds blew every which way and the yacht club took most of the singles matches whereas JPVIS took most of the double matches. Our juniors continue to improve their skills in clinics and they look forward to the final showdown come August.
On another note, last week's ice cream socials on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. had great turnouts with epic Hawaiian ping pong battles. The flavor of choice is definitely the Red Sox Green Monster Mint. Also movie night had it's first showing on the big 60-inch flat screen.
With the latest technology through Wii, the children are able to decide what movie they desire to see. New boards games and other activities have also been a hit. Stop by and see the new additions. Our thanks to a generous sponsor and patron of our community.
Both junior and adult clinics continue to be a big hit as the tennis courts and classes are filled much of the day. Stop by to discuss your summer tennis plans with Director Jeff or call him at 207-350-4455.
The next few weeks are full of dates where our JPVIS Centennial will continually be celebrated. Below are a list that we should all mark on our calendars. All events will take place at our Community House except for our Celebration dinner and Dance that will be held under a tent in Whitten's field.
Saturday July 27: JPVIS annual meeting; refreshments at 9 a.m., meeting at 9:30 a.m.
Thursday August 1 at 7 p.m.: Art and Holly Barnes will present a musical program titled “From Berlin to the Beatles and More.” In addition to the singing and piano and violin playing by Holly and Art, there will be some audience participation. The program was presented last January to a group of Stanford University Alumni in Sacramento and was very well received.
Saturday August 3: “Dancing Through the Decades” (Our big 100th birthday party); 5:30 p.m. for cocktails, 6:30 p.m. for dinner. Dancing after dinner and also special children's entertainment.

With the overload of activities and celebrations on the JPVIS calendar 2013 will be a summer like no other. Enjoy and celebrate with your family and friends.
