Summer residents, Perry Nies and his daughters, are here from Florida, enjoying a bit of a cooler life as they have for many summers. Missing in the family compound is Perry’s wife, Jane, who died at the age of 96 on Feb. 5. Area residents will have an opportunity to greet the family and celebrate Jane’s long and purposeful life July 29 beginning at 3 p.m. at the summer chapel of All Saints by-the -Sea.

You may come by car or by boat, and if by car, a shuttle will be available to give you a ride from the handicapped parking lot, down the path to the chapel. Look for more information in an article elsewhere in this paper.
Sarah Sherman is working on a project for the town to preserve the history of the island's Boston Post Cane recipients. To date she has verified the following names: Jean Luther Thompson (2019); Ruth Lepper Gardner (2011); Evelyn Connor Stratton (2002); Evelyn Luther Pratt, Louise Luther, Kathryn Buck, Addie Gray, and Royal Luther (1940s). Can anyone help her fill in the blanks? She is looking for additional names of Southport Island cane recipients and photos to accompany their story. If you can help, please contact Sarah at 207-633-7161 or email shermanmcgrail@yahoo.com.
Good news from Maureen Kinsey. Spectrum is going to upgrade Internet service on Cross Road beginning in July. Residents for many years have struggled with less than adequate broadband service, so this time has been long awaited.

A reminder that author, Julia O’Brien-Merrill will be giving a talk at the Southport Memorial Library on Saturday, June 24 at 10 a.m., telling the story, using historical documents of the original lyrics from “M.T.A.” - the campaign song written for her father, Walter A. O’Brien Jr., in his run for Mayor of Boston in 1949. A timeline at the end of the book has fascinating tidbits of Boston history and lore of the time-honored folk song. Our local musicians, “The Newagen Crew,” will provide entertainment, singing the Kingston Trio’s version of “M.T.A.” Julia will be signing and selling her books.
Thought our week of rain would end with a week of sunshine, but I guess not. At least our wells should be full.
