Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club
While it seems like spring will never come, the start of the 129th season of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club is now just two months away. The Club hosts numerous meetings, weekly Mah Jongg games, and monthly cocktail parties during the off season but now the activity around the Club is picking up with the high school sailing team returning to the Club. While the floats haven’t been launched yet, the sailors are learning racing tactics and strategies and are working on the boats and equipment in the Sailing and Education Center. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing the sailors out in the harbor soon.
Two more RS Feva sailboats have just arrived and will be added to this growing fleet to allow for match sailing and racing primarily during the summer morning and afternoon programs. This boat is designed with simpler rigging and is a plastic-hulled double handed dinghy and is well suited for sailors who are outgrowing the Opti but not yet ready to sail a 420.
BHYC will be hosting two youth regattas this summer. The “Battle of the Bay” will be held July 11 and 12 and the Maine State 420 Championship will take place on Aug. 8 and 9. These two youth regattas will bracket the BHYC Regatta and Classic Cup Challenge so there will be lots of activity on the water again this summer.
While most of the BHYC activities take place in Boothbay Harbor, about 40 members gathered in Charleston, South Carolina for a winter reunion. Members enjoyed their time attending the “Springtime in Charleston: 87th annual House and Garden Tour,” boat tours, and a dinner party at Past Commodore Bob and Lucy Scribner’s home.
