Welcome to spring!
This week, as always, we have what is called a Little Free Library outside our doorway. There are lots of books for you to browse and take home. Also, please feel free to come in as we have more books inside for your reading pleasure – all for free!
Also, for free, we have several plants which would be delighted to be adopted. The adoption fee is free. They don’t require a lot of direct sun, but they do drink water occasionally. Please feel free to look.
Don’t forget cribbage. While we have a scheduled time on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m., there’s usually a cribbage player here to join you if you want anytime. You can go back several weeks in our column in the Register to brush up on cribbage trivia.
Now for a little information about Mexican Train Dominoes, which we play on Thursdays. "Mexican Train" is a name typically used only in the United States. It is believed Mexican Train Dominoes is a variation on a Chinese game called Pai gow, which means "make nine." Chinese laborers brought the game to Latin America once they began working in sugar fields in the mid to late 1800s. Cubans and other Latin American players adopted the game to use dominoes and called it "Domino Cubano." In the 1860s, once Cuban laborers began working on U.S. railroads, they brought the game to the U.S. Americans began referring to the game as "Mexican Train Dominoes" because of its growing popularity among Cuban, Mexican, and other Latin American laborers working here to the United States.
