Help out at the Boothbay Region Free Clothing Closet
The Free Clothing Closet which operates at the Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor, but through the efforts of Steve Baseman had its origins at the Southport fire house in 2010, provides a vital service to our neighbors who need new clothing but are not financially able to purchase what they need. Donations are received in the Blue Box at the Recycling Center (the “dump.”)
To date the focus has been on offering warm clothing for the winter months and providing the service from October through April. However, those families and individuals short on income still have the need for our services in the summer months, so in order to meet that need we hope to reopen the closet for about two months from mid-July to mid-September.
To do so we must recruit a new crew of volunteers for those two months, what an ideal opportunity for our summer residents to get involved and give back to the community we all love.
After a training session, volunteers work in teams of two or three to sort the donated clothing collected in the Blue Box, hang the selected items in the closet, and open the closet the following day at 10 a.m. and close it at 4 p.m. Teams work either on Tuesday/Wednesday or Friday/Saturday. Each team will be scheduled to serve once every three weeks.
