Happy 100th birthday to our community
Except for the recent rainy, cool, foggy weather, everything points to the beginning of a busy, fun-filled summer of celebration of our community's 100th birthday.
The opening reception at the Community House overflowed with residents who all seemed to be ready to participate with the summers planned festivities. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with our many friends and neighbors and enjoy all the beverages and overload of canapés and snacks provided by our members.
The next all-Point festivity will be the annual lobster bake. Chairman Bunny Gagne reports that well over 100 tickets have been reserved as of last week, so a record attendance is expected.
Bunny has requested some volunteer help with setting up for the event. Please meet at the Community House on the day of the event at 10 a.m. if you are available to help. Bunny also requests that everyone to a sun dance for good weather for the event.
The night before the high school graduation Anne Dooley represented JPVIS at Awards Night for the senior class at Boothbay Harbor High School where 55 seniors marched into the auditorium, where family and friends waited to see what prizes would be awarded by the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund.
JPVIS has a named fund “The Manley Reed Juniper Point Memorial Fund” that is given out after a brief description. Anne made the presentation to Kade Smith, who was taken by surprise and happy to receive the scholarship. He will be studying technology at Southern Maine Community College this fall.
Two weeks later, Anne saw Kade working at Hannaford and chatted with him. He is interested in studying computer science. Anne hopes that everyone at JPVIS will give generously this summer to boost the Manley Reed fund to a self-sustaining level. The particulars are in a recent mailing from the committee, made up of Andy Matthews, Peter Edwards and Anne. Contact anyone of them for more information on the fund.
All tennis players that have arrived this week should check the schedule with our tennis director, Jeff Dawson. Movie nights will take place this season at the Community house on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Ice cream socials will be on Thursday at 6.
Mark Sunday July 28 on your calendar as the date for the JPVIS Cottage Walk. This special event for our residents will be held at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Self guided tours leave from the Community House where directions and maps will be provided. Over 20 community cottages will be visited. Refreshments will be served in the afternoon at one of the homes.
There is no charge for this event but participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the Manley Reed Fund in a receptacle at the Community House.
The Crawford/Harriger's have had a very busy year. Wedding bells were ringing when Jim and Barbara finally tied the knot down in Hope Town in the Bahamas on last March 1. After 43 years of being Barbara Crawford, she is now Barbara Harriger.
On May 4, her oldest daughter Jessica was married to Darrell Parrot in Burlington, Vt. It was a beautiful ceremony on a gorgeous, sunny day. On May 6, Barbara received a phone call from the crew of the private motor yacht that daughter Jenny works on.
The boat was in Monaco and she was told that Jenny was in the hospital and needed emergency back surgery, due to a herniated disc that caused absolutely no feeling in her lower right leg. Barbara spent 23 days in Monaco and Italy doing private duty nursing. It was quite an unexpected first trip to Europe.
Don't forget that all sorts of memorabilia commemorating our centennial birthday are available. They include all sizes, styles and colors of tee shirts, sweat shirts as well as a wide assortment of glassware including wine glasses, mugs, goblet etc. For additional information contact our president, Peter Edwards.
It is great to see so many cottages lit up and so many cars in the driveways after a very quiet early month of June on our Point. Now everyone should put in an order for two months of sunshine and warm weather. Our 100th birthday is off to a great start.
