Boothbay won its first road game Oct.19 with a 28-12 victory over Traip Academy in Kittery. The win keeps Boothbay (4-3) atop the eight-man Small Conference standings. Boothbay’s scoreboard dominance wasn’t reflected on the gridiron. Boothbay narrowly outgained Traip, 255-247, in total yardage. The biggest difference was turnovers. Traip threw four interceptions. Boothbay quarterback Hunter Crocker threw none. A lost fumble accounted for the only Seahawk turnover. 

And Boothbay didn’t suffer from a slow offensive start as it had in previous road games. Boothbay scored first on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Crocker to Michael Hollowell in the first quarter. Boothbay didn’t score again until late in the third quarter. Hollowell broke a 6-6 tie with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Another Boothbay touchdown followed midway through the fourth quarter. Crocker scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. With Boothbay leading 20-6, Traip scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cut Boothbay’s lead to six. The Rangers tried an onside kick which Hollowell scooped up and ran 50 yards for a touchdown. Hollowell scored three of Boothbay’s four touchdowns.

Seahawk offensive leaders were Crocker completing four of 14 passes for 110 yards. He also rushed for 95 yards on 13 carries. Hollowell rushed for 31 yards on 15 carries. He also had two receptions for 51 yards. One reception was for 45 yards.On defense, Crocker and Hollowell were also standout performers. Crocker had four tackles and 10 assists. Hollowell made four tackles and assisted on four others. Mike Cusumano had four tackles and four assists. 

Boothbay’s regular season finale may impact the eight-man football small conference standings and playoff positioning. The Seahawks travel south Oct. 25 to play No. 2 Old Orchard Beach (4-3). Boothbay’s 111.86 Crabtree points are nearly 12 more than Old Orchard Beach’s 99.95. A Boothbay victory clinches home field advantage in the postseason. The other three small conference teams are also battling for playoff berths and positioning. Telstar and Traip are both 3-4 with 88.13 Crabtree points. They are tied for the final two playoff spots. Four of the five small conference teams earn playoff berths. No.5 Sacopee Valley (2-5) can still make the postseason with a victory next week over Traip. Telstar faces big conference foe Mt. Ararat.
