Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

Tue, 04/16/2019 - 11:00am

It’s hard to believe that the middle of April is upon us. The torrential downpour early this morning washed away the long lingering tenacious snow. Spring is aching to start while temperatures hover in the mid-50s. My mother would have said “Spring is coming … But then so is Christmas.” Heaven forbid.

This Thursday marks the last Thursday Cocktails in the Boothbay Harbor One Design Room for the winter. It will be hosted By Dale and Ida Lancaster. Thursdays in May will have us returning to the clubhouse and the bright spirit of Dave Schoentag behind the bar. Various groups will begin hosting these well attended socials June through September, thanks to the organization of Mimi O’Neill.
Saturday at 900 hours (9 a.m.) we will have our monthly board meeting in the conference room in The Sailing and Education Center.

Just in from Charlie Cochrane, team leader for the Junior Program team: Boothbay Region Sailing Team is now at a record-breaking enrollment of 14 sailors. The Junior Program and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club are now recognized as Lincoln Academy’s sailing program. We welcome
this opportunity to partner with the Academy.

Throughout the spring, summer and fall, the Junior Program offers instruction and racing for mariners 6 to 18 for young people from throughout the Boothbay region. Scholarships are available. Full days are available and can include tennis. Inclement weather days will be on land instruction in the Harbor Level and the Boothbay Harbor One Design Room in The Sailing and Education Center.

The Center was eight years in the making and will officially be one year old in June.

Geoff McCuskey will be returning as BHYC’s Adult Sailing director. Geoff was with the club some years back and was responsible for putting us in position with The US Sailing Association. Geoff is an accomplished sailor and instructor. I had the pleasure of days on the water with Geoff during his previous tenure.
