Athletes honored at winter sports banquet

Allan Crocker, athletic director at Boothbay Region High School, summed up the 2012-2013 winter sports banquet when he said “I have not come across a season yet that compares to the one we just had.”
Seahawks athletes from five sports programs were recognized at Porter Memorial Gymnasium, March 13, and this season's achievements included a Western Maine Championship basketball team, a state wrestling champion, 10 all-conference athletes, three McDonald's all-stars, and a Mountain Valley Coach of the Year award.
The 2012-2013 season also marked the return of wrestling and swimming at BRHS. Although the Boothbay athletes trained independently and never had the benefit of a home meet, Crocker said they excelled at their sports. The swimmers were Nichole LaBrecque, Samantha Carter, Bradford Tibbetts and Ethan Walker.
“We had three swimmers qualify for the state meet and hopefully become the nucleus for many years of swimming here at the high school,” Crocker said.
Wrestlers Howard Carter and Anthony Maulolo also qualified for the state meet. Carter placed third at the regional meet and came in fifth in states. Maulolo was the regional runner-up, and after a comeback from an injury, he went on to become the first state champion for BRHS since 1996.
Crocker thanked all the hard work put in by the athletes as well as the coaches' dedication, the parents and the community for their support.
“Winter is the longest of all the sports seasons and it takes a huge commitment in terms of time and energy. Thank you for providing us all with some great memories,” he said.
Each coach recapped their season and presented awards to the respective athletes. At the conclusion, Crocker read a story by Rick Reiley, which he tweaked to include Seahawks references:
“I don’t think the meaning of life is all about winning or losing, but cherishing all the little accomplishments along the way. We are here to coach and be role models and someday give back to the sports in our community like so many have done for us … We are here to see Anthony jump higher than anyone would expect a person could, or to see Alex block a shot so hard it creates a fast break on the other end … We are here to look for the loose ball on the floor, only to see one of the Hepburn boys come out of the tangle of players with it … Or to see Sophia run toward the finish line so far ahead of the competition we think she is the only one in the race.”
