Southport Column: Flowers, water, a baptism and more

Wed, 04/25/2018 - 11:30am

Bright days of sun have encourage daffodils to flower and many folks to begin the spring cleanup. Asplunde continues to cut branches overhanging power lines, now on the west side near Newagen.  The town arranged for cutting brush along Route 238 between Strout Road and our driveway to provide a bit more of a clear sight line, especially for cars traveling north around the curve and down the hill for which we are very grateful.

From Sandra Seifert comes good news the husband, Cy, is now recovering in the Zimmerli Pavilion at St. Andrews Village. A few visitors at a time, I am sure, would encourage his recovery. Sandra also reports that the osprey is back on her nest on top of the #3 day beacon at the entrance of Cozy Harbor.  We can all thank former Southport resident, Rachel Carson, for her campaign against the indiscriminate use of DDT, which saved this species and many others.

When you visit the Southport Memorial Library be sure to check out the Earth Day tree decorated with many stuff animals, inviting you to pat their soft coats.

Other signs of warmer weather is that summer water is flowing on Southport and throughout the region. Thanks to water district employees for all their hard work.

Further signs of outdoor activity is the appearance of a picnic table and other tables beneath the pavilion at the Island Store. Before too long we will be carrying our sandwiches and pizza outside to enjoy both the food and the fresh air.

I hear from the library round table folks that Bob Eaton will be part of Maine’s Honor Flight program, leaving this Friday from Portland Jet Port to fly to Washington, D.C.  for several days of sightseeing, especially the World War II memorials and other sights built in the veterans’ honor. Veterans are escorted by volunteer guardians who ensure the veteran has a great and safe experience. The Honors Flight Network is a non-profit organization formed solely to honor American veterans for their service, focusing now on World War II veterans, but then moving on to Korean War and Vietnam War vets. Wikipedia reports that the Honor Flight Network has flown over 159,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. since the organization began in May 2005. Participation in this program is supported by donations and therefore is free for the veteran. For more information Google Honor Flight Network.  Have a great time, Bob.

The Southport United Methodist Church was full of Shermans last Sunday when Miranda, daughter of Anita and Bill Sherman, and her husband brought their little girl, Kinsley, to be baptized. Ramona described the beautiful little girl and how she snuggled into the pastor’s arms as he carried her throughout the congregation.

Again, please mark your calendars for the Island Clean Up, Sunday, May 6 beginning at noon with hot dogs and other lunch goodies at the Southport Town Hall.
