Sixth graders at Edgecomb Eddy School learn about responsibility through community service

Edgecomb Eddy’s sixth graders go the extra mile for their community, taking to heart the school motto of the three Rs, Respect, Responsibility, and Reflection.  As the oldest students of the school, sixth graders have always taken leadership roles, but in recent years, teacher Laurie Brown has expanded their duties to reflect today’s increasing awareness of individual responsibility in shaping our world.  In addition to traditional classroom jobs, such as sharpening pencils and passing out papers, these 6th graders take on special assignments that benefit the entire Eagle Nation.

The week of March 31 saw a tumultuous turn of events as the Trump administration launched sweeping tariffs on trading partners across the world, many who have responded in turn. So far, Maine’s lobster industry has escaped the brunt of the conflict. However, concern lingers.

Bigelow Laboratory and the aquaculture industry partner to find new possibilities for eDNA

Every time a shark swims by, a blade of kelp sways in the water, or a tiny copepod poops, it leaves behind traces of DNA. These floating bits of genetic code, called environmental DNA, enable scientists to monitor the distribution and abundance of different species — even those just passing through or too rare or small to easily observe.

A history of the Armillary Garden within the Boothbay Memorial Garden

After the purchase of the land now known as the Memorial Garden in Boothbay – located just west of the Boothbay Common - by the Boothbay Civic Association (BCA) in 1995, an effort, spearheaded by Chet Rittall was started to raise funds for an armillary. He had seen a much smaller version at Lincoln Academy and thought it would fit nicely into the BCA's beautification project. With donated funds, Peter Brown's design and construction, Douglas Harley's welding, and Mike Tomacelli's machine shop, the armillary was completed.
