Beware of water bill scam
Boothbay Region Water District Manager Jon Ziegra reports there is a new scam directed at water customers.
Like the CMP scam, water customers are receiving telephone calls and being told either that their water bill is overdue or their payment cannot be processed. Threatening water shutoff, the scammer directs the customer to purchase a pre-paid credit card and call back with the card information.
Ziegra said the scam has been perpetrated in other parts of the state this week, but he knows of no local customers who have been contacted yet.
He said the water district would never direct a customer to purchase a pre-paid credit card, even if there were a problem with a prior payment.
“All billing is handled at our office on Adams Pond Road. If anyone has any question about a bill, they should call our billing office at 633-4723, ext. 110,” Ziegra said.
