Library unveils summer event schedule
The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library’s programming department has an exciting line-up for summer 2015 starting with Windjammer Week, June 22-27.
July is an fun month for family programing with a packed schedule offering a variety of child and family-friendly, free programming to keep everyone busy and happily learning while away from school.
August highlights include the final summer movie showing, a family lawn concert and kids art workshop.
“I wanted to incorporate a taste of everything for all ages, including the often elusive teens, with our robotics workshop in July for example,” said Caroline Roberts, program director at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. “There is really no reason not to be involved in at least something, because of the wealth of opportunities available at BHML. It’s one of the things that make our community unique, this gem of a library.”
“We have a wonderful wide array of programs that we’re offering this year,” Children’s Librarian Mary Pinkham.
The Windjammer festivities at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library begin with the Boothbay Region Crafters on the library lawn on Monday, June 22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to visit the crafters with their unique products such as artesian jewelry, quilted purses, jams, jellies, sea glass items, artwork and photography, and much more, all created on the Midcoast of Maine. A portion of the proceeds benefit the library expansion project.
Bring the kids and join in the fun for Windjammer’s for Wee Mateys on the library lawn Tuesday, June 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You don’t want to miss the Aquarium Touch Tank; Art Crafts with Miss Mary, and of course, the yummy popcorn from the Coastal Maine Popcorn. This annual event kicks off our children’s summer reading program, June 23 through Sept 1.
This year’s summer reading theme is “Every Hero has a Story.” Sign-up sheets to participate in the reading program will be available at the event. For more information about BHML’s summer reading program for kids, call Pinkham at 207-633-3112.
Thursday, June 25, BHML kicks off Celebrate Summer Family Movies with their first monthly movie at 2 p.m. of “Nim’s Island.” Bring the well-loved, favorite, stuffed-animal friends to share in this island adventure and the library will provide tropical snacks. Life is an adventure for an outgoing youngster named Nim (Abigail Breslin), who lives on a remote, tropical island with her marine-biologist father and a menagerie of animal friends. When Nim's father goes missing, she turns to the only person she knows who can help her, adventurer Alex Rover (Gerard Butler). What she doesn't know, is that Alex Rover is really Alexandra (Jodie Foster), a timid, reclusive author. Though faint of heart, Alexandra must find the strength within herself to come to Nim's aid. Together, they find through their courage in adverse circumstances, that love will prevail.
Register with the library for this event or series at 207-633-3112 or email croberts@bmpl.lib.me.us. Participants may register in advance for the next two movies: July 17, “Ratatouille,” 2 p.m., where the kids will bring in and share their unique culinary creations, and the Aug. 7 movie, “Heaven Is For Real,” 1 p.m., popcorn and fruit will be provided.
Our Windjammer festivities will culminate with an entertaining, colorful puppet show with Lindsay and Her Puppet Pals on Saturday, June 27, 3-4 p.m. on the library front lawn. Lindsay’s highly interactive, comedic performance delights the young and the young at heart! These jumbo sized, hand crafted puppets charm even the most timid audience members and provide lovable characters for thoughtful and memorable short tales.
Kids are known to chatter about their favorite crazy puppets for weeks after a show! Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to spread out and prepare to be entertained.
