Discover the fascinating history of outboard motors June 17

On Wednesday, June 17 at 7 p.m., the Boothbay Railway Village will host an illustrated lecture on the foundations of outboard motor development. This is one section of a four-part series on the history of outboard motors to be presented by West Boothbay Harbor summer resident Larry Stevenson on Wednesdays, June 17, July 8, Aug. 12 and Aug. 26 in the historic 1847 Boothbay Town Hall. Guests are invited to come to one or come to all.
The entire series will cover the American, Waterman, Caille, Motorgo, Waterwitch, Elgin, West Bend, Chrysler and Force brands, along with Evinrude, Johnson and the creation of OMC. The emphasis will be on stories about the people who created them, and the influence of Art Deco and Streamlining on their design from 1906 to 1966.
There will be a special focus on the work of industrial designers Brooks Stevens, Raymond Loewy and John R. Morgan, as well as the cross over from automobile design during each decade. Examples of each brand will be on display as reference points.
Stevenson is a Navy and Coast Guard Auxiliary veteran, who is a retired UPS International Industrial Engineering Manager in the international operation. He has lived in the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany, and has a passion for art history, industrial design, sailing, history and collecting old outboard motors.
This lecture is part of a new Summer Lecture Series at the Boothbay Railway Village. The talk will take place inside the historic 1847 Boothbay Town Hall at the Boothbay Railway Village. A donation of $5 is suggested for admission and proceeds will benefit the Museum’s general operating fund. The Boothbay Railway Village is located at 586 Wiscasset Road, Route 27 in Boothbay.
