Annual meeting of the Friends of the Southport Historical Society
The annual meeting of the Friends of the Southport Historical Society will be held on Monday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Southport Town Hall.
Always an entertaining and informative event, this year’s meeting will highlight the recent acquisition of the historic “Sproule Map” from the British Library in London, which will be on display. Mr. Ian Fowler, acting director of the Osher Map Library in Portland and a noted expert, will discuss the characteristics of this beautiful map of the region created in 1772 by Ensign George Sproule of the British Army (not Navy).
The highly detailed map covers the area extending from the Kennebec to Round Pond and the Muscongus Bay.
Fowler will connect how this beautiful document fit into the “Atlantic Neptune” collection, the first scientific charting of the eastern seaboard.
There will additionally be a very short business meeting, and refreshments will be served afterward. Friends of the Society and the general public are invited to what promises to be an interesting and fun evening.
