Boothbay Region High School baseball coach Chris Garneau has looked for his line-up to show some “thunder and lightning” all season. And that’s what he got in the bottom of the first inning May 28 during his team’s final home game.

With Boothbay Region trailing Hall-Dale, 2-0, the game was halted due to weather conditions, more precisely, thunder and lightning.

The inclement weather didn’t hamper the pre-game ceremony honoring the final home game for senior co-captains Nick Burge and Zach Vise. Garneau acknowledged the players’ contributions to the baseball program during the past four years.

Garneau credited Burge for being the team’s best pitcher. He also congratulated him for achieving one of his goals.

“He threw strikes for us all year long. Nick is a team leader and his contributions will be missed,” Garneau said. “He also achieved his goal of hitting more home runs than Zach Vise.”

Burge hit his lone career home run this year against Mountain Valley. He will attend the University of Maine at Orono this fall.

Garneau said Vise was a “quiet leader” and also a consummate team player who played several positions.

“Zach doesn’t say much, but he is a team leader by his example. Whether I ask him to third, short, second or left field, he does it will a smile,” Garneau said.

Vise will attend Husson University in Bangor this fall.

Boothbay Region is 0-14. The Seahawks’ best chance to win a game this season was the opener against Wiscasset. Boothbay Region lost 2-1 to the Wolverines in eight innings. On May 26, the Seahawks hosted Wiscasset, but the game wasn’t close. Three first inning errors led to four Wolverine runs. Boothbay Region lost 10-0 in five innings.

“We just started off badly and never recovered,” Garneau said. “It should’ve been a 1-2-3 first inning, but we made three errors which put us behind.”

Boothbay Region’s next game is at 4 p.m on Monday, June 1 versus St. Dominic’s. The Seahawks will travel to Lewiston for a game against its Class C rival. St. Dominic (9-5) is in eighth place in the Western Maine Class C standings.

The Seahawks return home on Tuesday, June 2 for a make-up game against Class C Hall-Dale of Farmingdale. The Bulldogs (9-4) are in seventh place in the Heal Point standings. The game will begin at 2 p.m. at Sherman Field.
